Our Business

The Garnet Mercantile is Nevada's only Community Owned full service department store.  Founded in 2004, it replaced JCPenney which closed in 2003 after 90 years of operation in Ely.  The closing of Ely's only department store sparked a community effort to replace JCPenney in the same downtown location thus not only preserving the downtown area but providing a continuation of critical goods and services to the community.  The effort resulted in the formation of the COMMUNITY OWNED MERCANTILE PROJECT, organized by local volunteers raising $495,000 in capital from the public stock offerings of 353 shareholders.  The outcome of this successful project was the formation of what is now the Garnet Mercantile.

The Garnet Mercantile is the a friendly, down-home department store established to meet the needs of locals as well as customers from outside the Ely/White Pine area.  Our success has and will continue to lie on :
